Unfortunately, you won’t see hobgoblins and small Fairies flying around like you would after magic mushrooms. But even though, it’s worth a try.
The first time I tried them, camping in Canada, at least five years ago I saw an English man preparing a cup of tea next to the bonfire in the middle of the night. When I woke up in the morning, the man was gone, of course.
And five years later I am in England. Was that a sign?? Who knows?
You can try this simple mushroom recipe, and I can guarantee that you will see people preparing and drinking tea. Especially when you’re in England…..Otherwise, I have to disappoint you that the only magic is their taste and simplicity.
My favorite recipe is the original, Transylvanian (soft sheep’s milk cheese and smoked bacon), but the mozzarella with British smoked bacon is a very good option as well for those who are scared a bit of the heavy tastes.
Cheese and Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms
- 500-700 g open button mushrooms
- 3 slices of British bacon
- 1 slice of Transylvanian smoked bacon
- Transylvanian soft sheep’s milk cheese (Brânză de burduf), mozzarella, cheddar and feta cheese (50 g of each)
- salt and pepper
Wipe the mushrooms clean and pull the stems carefully. Stuff the mushrooms with different types of cheese with a thin slice of bacon on the top. Season with salt and pepper. Place them in the preheated oven and cook for 20 minutes or until the mushrooms are tender.
